The archaeology of Sanae
THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF SANAE"Archaeology" here has three layers: one in the mountains of Nagano (the real-world prototype), one in ZUN's games (official appearances), and one in fandom's shared memory (meme history). Stack all three, and you get the whole Sanae.
Myth & the Real Prototype
ANCIENTThe Suwa arrival legend
The indigenous god Moreya resisted the invading Takeminakata (Suwa Myōjin) and was subdued — this ancient conflict is the direct prototype of the "Suwa Great War" spell cards and Moriya Shrine lore.
The Moriya clan and Shinchōkan
Descendants of Moreya served as the Shinchōkan (head priests) of Suwa Taisha for generations — the historical "Moriya family." Mount Moriya, Fujishima Shrine and the Shinchōkan kofun belong to this system.
Meiji priesthood reform
The 76th head, Moriya Sanekusa, lost the Shinchōkan post in the Meiji reforms; the family's secret rites ended there (per the Shinchōkan Moriya Archive booklet).
Sanae Moriya is born★
The prototype: the 78th head of the Moriya family. She served as the 8th principal of Kamikōdai Minami Elementary in Edogawa, Tokyo, retiring in 2006 to lecture on environmental protection.

The Fan-Archaeology Layer
FANDOMGentle → unbound → "S-mae"★
Per the Pixiv Encyclopedia: early fan works wrote her gentle and earnest; around SA she cut loose; after UFO her sadistic side was magnified — "Kuro-Sanae," "Kazehofuri."
Gensou Kaleidoscope begins
Manpuku Jinja's doujin anime starts; its "Youkai Mountain Decisive Battle" chapters (14–17) later adapt MoF with Sanae declaring war on Reimu.
Zettai Yuru Sanae★
Eranon posts the original clip (sm23040202); March 7 becomes "Sanae Day." The MMD drama (sm25324975) becomes a classic.
First Memory / Next Memory★
The Akatsuki Records × Liz Triangle joint album PV (Reitaisai 13): Joyful's portrait of Sanae growing up — a pillar of the uniform-Sanae canon.
Pilgrimage makes the news★
Asahi Shimbun (Oct 28, 2017) reports fans flocking to Moriya Shrine in Okaya; the shrine itself had acknowledged the pilgrims in 2016.
"Sanae is a good girl"
From Happy Flame Time's Cold Wind but Warm Winter, p.29 — alongside the Reimu-red/Sanae-green "Mario Brothers" gag (older derogatory memes are discussed on Reddit).
Meme crosscurrents
"Don't be held captive by common sense," "2P Reimu," the Moriya family's put-upon caretaker — memes flow between the Chinese and Japanese spheres.
Voice & licensed works★
Drama CDs cast Imai Asami as Sanae; AQUASTYLE's Miracle Party (with Tenshi) and its remake star her; Touhou LostWord features her too.
